He's been reflecting on his relationship with Sarah, and he's kicking himself for abandoning things. Hurtling through space for months, maybe years, he's starting to go a little stir crazy. Only Time - Okay, now we're back to Adam. She's heading to the same planet he told her he was leaving for.Ħ. She misses him, she's lost without him, and she's decided to go to space to follow him. Traveling Far - Still Sarah for now, but she's no longer angry at Adam. Only now, as this song goes on, is she realizing that doesn't mean she was better than him she's realizing she was needlessly stubborn and even cruel, and that she took advantage of his nature, bending it to her own.ĥ. But the thing she liked about that is that he was always submissive to her in a sense - he would always be the one to bend, to yield to her indomitable will. She was always the responsible and focused one in the relationship - the stone - and Adam was fleeting, fanciful, and often unreliable. In light of Adam's extended absence, she's growing frustrated. Stone - This is where Sarah's feelings start to change. At this point, Sarah's still bitter at him for leaving.Ĥ. Basically saying she'd be stupid to follow him, that he's a coward, fleeing, and that the real darkness of what's happening to Earth will catch up to him. True Dark - This one is a little more allegorical and abstract, but it's basically a song from Sarah chastising Adam for leaving. At this point, they're dealing with the 'ghost' of Adam's presence, but still kinda in denial that they miss him.ģ. Chasing Ghosts - Sarah is dealing with the wake of that and chasing what makes them happy. He figures the best thing he can do for her is to leave and stop ruining things, even if he dies trying to colonize a new world.Ģ. He goes off into space, admitting he's a poor lover, a poor partner, and just seeing himself as an awful person. Alas - Adam is saying goodbye, announcing his departure. I know you asked about I Have Arrived, but I'm gonna cover it all just for thoroughness:ġ. With that in mind, the path of things is more like this. In interviews with the band, Adam mentions that it's about one lover chasing the other after realizing they made a mistake not joining them. Okay so your problem here is actually that I Have Arrived isn't about Adam returning to Earth. Adam is the one in Alas singing about leaving. Alright so for the sake of simplicity/as a fun little joke, we're gonna call the two lovers Adam and Sarah.
